What is vestibular assessment?
The purpose of vestibular testing
The primary aim is to determine whether your symptoms are due to a vestibular (inner ear balance) disorder. Where possible, the results will help identify the cause of your dizziness, vertigo, imbalance or other related symptoms and guide appropriate management.
Why get vestibular testing with specialised equipment and professionals?
To help identify the if cause of dizziness or imbalance originates in the inner ear or other systems
To avoid further complications in an already complex condition
To measure vestibular organ function objectively
To guide personalised rehabilitation
To monitor progress and recovery over time
Why is a full vestibular assessment important?
In many cases, balance, dizziness or vertigo is treated with medication alone. While medication may help manage symptoms, it does not always identify the underlying cause.
Without proper diagnosis, the body may begin to compensate incorrectly, which can lead to incomplete recovery or further difficulties over time.
A comprehensive vestibular assessment aims to identify if any part (or parts) of the balance system are affected — inner ear, eyes, brain, or movement systems.
Using a combination of:
Detailed medical and psychosocial history
Objective vestibular testing with specialised equipment
Hearing assessments
Bedside audio-vestibular assessments (eye movement, balance, etc.)
Imaging (MRI or CT) when required – usually requested with ENT
Specialist multiprofessional interpretation
We are able to accurately diagnose the cause of dizziness, vertigo, or imbalance and guide appropriate rehabilitation.
