Ear examination (otoscopy/video otoscopy)
This is usually the first examination that will be carried out when you visit an Audiologist. It involves looking at your entire outer ear with a special device called an otoscope. This device contains a light and a magnifying lens to enable close examination of the ear canal and eardrum.
If you wish to see the inside of your own ear, we are able to use a video otoscope. This is a similar device to the otoscope, but has a tiny camera that transmits the images onto a computer screen.
The ear examination provides vital information about the shape of your ear canal and the condition of your ear. With this information we are able to determine exactly what steps we should take to explore your hearing difficulties. For example, a hearing test cannot be conducted if your ear is filled with wax (it would be like doing an eye test with a patch on the eye), so the first step would be to clear the wax. Or if the ear examination reveals that you have very narrow ear canals, we would need to assess your hearing with a different type of headset that will go inside the ear canal.
If you want to have your ear examined or if you simply want to have a look into your own ears, contact The Art of Hearing to book an appointment.
