Tinnitus explained

Tinnitus is the perception of any sound that comes from inside your body or brain rather than an outside source. If you have tinnitus you may be experiencing a ringing, buzzing, roaring or hissing sound in your ears or in your head.

Tinnitus is very common – so you are not alone.

Many people experience temporary tinnitus, which means it usually disappears after a few hours or days. It can mostly be heard when you are in a quiet environment with no other sound. Some common causes of temporary tinnitus are

Exposure to loud noise
Ear infections
Wax build up

Tinnitus is generally associated with your emotional status and stress. You may develop tinnitus after a life changing, emotional or stressful event.

Tinnitus is also associated with hearing difficulty. In this case, the tinnitus could be caused by the brain trying to compensate for the absence of sound stimulation from the ear.

You may be an individual who perceives tinnitus as more of an annoyance than an actual problem. This is because your brain is able to supress and ignore the sounds with almost no effort. So the tinnitus remains in the background and does not have an effect on you or your daily life.

Access to Work

Access to Work is a government funded scheme that helps people with a hearing difficulty to have equal access to workplaces.

This scheme can help you if your hearing difficulty affects the way you do your job. It offers you and your employer advice and support with extra costs which may arise because of your needs. As a first step employers are required to make ‘reasonable adjustments’ to ensure you are not substantially disadvantaged when doing your job
